Municipal water

Safe drinking water in. Clean water back to nature.

Ozone purifies municipal water at both ends, disinfecting what people drink and breaking down what conventional treatment leaves in the water we return to rivers and sea.

the challenge

Two duties, one resource.

A municipality has to deliver water that is safe to drink, and return water to nature without the micropollutants conventional plants let through. Both duties are getting harder. From 2026 the EU caps PFAS in drinking water, and by 2045 large treatment plants must add a fourth step to remove pharmaceuticals and other micropollutants. And it should be done without adding a new chemical problem.

EU Drinking Water Directive (PFAS, 2026). EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive 2024/3019.

Safe to drink

Clean, safe water from the tap.

Clean to return

Nothing harmful left in the outfall.

Fewer chemicals

Compliance without a new pollutant to remove.

What we purify here

Why ozone

One oxidiser, both ends of the pipe.

Ozone is one of nature's strongest disinfectants and oxidisers. At the intake it kills the pathogens chlorine struggles with and clears taste, odour and colour. At the outfall it breaks down the pharmaceuticals and micropollutants that pass through conventional treatment. Made on site from oxygen, it reverts to oxygen, adding no chemical that has to be removed later.

drinking water

Water that is safe, and tastes of nothing at all.

Disinfection

Destroys bacteria, viruses and the resistant parasites Cryptosporidium and Giardia that chlorine can miss.

Taste, odour and colour

Oxidises geosmin and MIB in seconds, and removes colour, iron and manganese.

Fewer by-products

Unlike chlorine, ozone leaves no THMs or haloacetic acids behind.

The fourth step

Stopping what conventional treatment lets through.

Every day, the medicines and chemicals we consume pass through wastewater plants that were never built to remove them. Ozone is one of the proven ways to add the fourth, quaternary step the EU now requires, breaking down pharmaceuticals, hormones and other micropollutants before the water reaches rivers and sea. Paired with activated carbon, ozone breaks the molecules into smaller fragments that the carbon then captures.

  • Over 80% removal of target micropollutants.

  • Chemical-free, with no secondary pollutant left behind.

  • Proven at full scale, from the first Swiss plants to installations today.

Controlled by design

The right dose, proven every second.

Ozone has to be dosed with care. In drinking water with high bromide, too much can form bromate, and in every plant the result has to be documented. Arrow Lake doses in real time and records every measurement, so you get effective treatment, stay within the limits, and can prove it to the regulator.

WHO guideline value for bromate in drinking water: 10 µg/L.
